Originally released in 1979, produced with the assistance of Tangerine Dream's Peter Baumann, Hans-Jachim Roedelius' Jardin Au Fou (translated as Garden Of Fools) comes reissued with six bonus tracks in this new 2009 edition - three new pieces and three remixes. The liner notes penned by long-time friend and artistic companion Asmus Tietchens are keen to point out not only the playful, fairground feel that characterises so much of this peculiar album, but also the one-man musical driving force that is Roedelius himself - the Krautrock icon abandons sequencers and abstract sounds in favour of hand-played vignettes demonstrating the composer's instrumental dexterity and traditional composerly vision. The waltzing romance of 'Toujours' sounds like a Yann Tiersen soundtrack miniature, while the likes of 'Cafe Central' stoke up images of a carousel ride where all the horses have been replaced by exotic analogue synthesizers. The title track further experiments with understatedly joyful sounds, marrying birdsong field recordings with gentle, balmy piano figures, and throughout all this there's very little evidence of Roedelius' history as part of Kluster, although thanks to 'Etoiles' we do get to spend a little time in the company of the composer's more experimental side, which here embraces lullaby electric pianos and cello sweeps, all framed within a droning, lightly propulsive electronic hum.
